Our Dystopian Virtual Future Awaits

Facebook is buying Oculus, maker of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The price is $2 billion according to The Verge. Money quote from Zuckerberg:

By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.

Maybe I am a crotchety old man these days but isn’t this the background scene in every sci-fi dystopian horror world, a population living in a land of purely virtual contact.

The internet is exploding over this one, and almost none of it is positive. I don’t know enough about Oculus’s business model to know what this actually means for them, but at what point do the big companies start to become concerned when the first reaction everyone has to acquisition news is something along the lines of this:
